Top 10 Most Common House Problems

Whether you're in the market for a new home or selling your current home,
you will want to be aware of these common issues:
  1. Over one-third of inspectors report drainage issues as the most frequently discovered problem.
  2. One-fifth of inspectors report electrical wiring mistakes as a common problem.  This is due in large part to projects done by homeowners instead of professionals.
  3. Fewer than 10% say old and leaky roofs are the biggest problem they see.
  4. Heating systems that don't work properly or are down right dangerous are the next most frequently reported problem.
  5. Neglected maintenance and upkeep are often the source of problems reported by inspectors, whether cosmetic or larger in scale.
  6. Structural problems are common in older homes.
  7. Plumbing problems such as faulty waste lines and inefficient water heaters are common.
  8. Some owners actually over seal their homes and poor ventilation can result, leading to rot and mold.
  9. Home inspectors often find issues with too little caulking and weather stripping as well.
  10. Miscellaneous difficulties can arise from lead-based paint and/or asbestos.
